BIOGRAPHY Kaya is the new urban project from the home of Inigo Records with a new innovative sound that is reawakening the UK urban scene. Born in January 2006, Kaya are currently in the studio writing and recording their debut album set for release later in the year. Both Natty’s and Aina’s musical paths had already crossed prior to forming Kaya, with their involvement in the True Ingredients and previously Sweettoof. Having not found a project they both felt comfortable with a mutual friend mentioned as a throw away comment that they should both just ‘do it on their own’. Hence the seeds were sown. Just after Christmas 2005 Natty hooked up with an old writing partner and former band mate Matt and the pair set about writing a body of music that they both felt represented their mood towards the way the world seemed to them. ‘We both had loads of old riffs and melodies that we had stock piled over the years and with the political climate the way it was and still is Natty had a lot to say’, says Matt. ‘To me the music had to be more all encompassing than the steady, format derived hip hop that has been coming out,’ says Natty. ‘I have issues I want to talk about, I feel that this project is a way of getting through to people on a more personal level, it lets me express myself more freely’. Then, less than 1 month after starting to write the tracks (11 of them), Kaya kicked off their highly anticipated live PAs alongside DJ Spike in Germany at Berlin’s Fashion Week on the 29th of January, where they performed alongside UK Chart Act The Sugababes and new US R&B / pop artist Ne-yo. ‘It was amazing to think that in such a short time we had managed to pull together a killer live set and perform it in front of several thousands of people over a weekend’ says Aina. ‘When we saw the crowd reacting to the tracks in such a positive way we knew we had something special. That is the best feeling a singer can get’. On their return back to London Natty and Aina felt they both wanted more from the project. So they started to put a full live band together. ‘The tracks needed that extra something that only a live band can achieve. The Pas we were both doing were great but we wanted a band to reinforce the sound and lyrics’, says Aina. So after some calls a 3 piece was put together comprising of Tom H on Drums, Tom Y on bass and Matt on guitar. ‘We were all worried about how the studio based sound was going to translate. Matt felt that not having the programmable element to the live set was going to be a problem’, says Tom H. ‘In the end the 3 of us, me, Tom H and Matt just jammed for hours each week on each track and slowly re worked them. ‘We ended up with tracks that bear all the hall marks of the recordings but all the excitement and movement of a full live sound’, says Tom Y. The band were soon put to the test at their first gig on the 3rd June, booked to play a mid line up slot at the Hope Weekender. A few days before the promoter phoned Natty to say there was a problem, one of the bands had dropped out he wanted Kaya to headline. Kaya didn’t say no. So, there first ever full band gig and it turned into a headlining slot on the Saturday. ‘We turned up to the festival a little apprehensive, no one really talking to each other’, laughs Matt. ‘I tell you though, from the moment we all started playing I just knew we were going to tear people apart’. And they did. The crowd was at capacity and a meagre 40 minute set was extended (largely by Natty asking for band freestyles) to well over an hour…. So, here we are - 6 months on and Kaya are preparing for their debut single release at the end of July, ‘Slaves’, they about to record the ‘Look Beneath The Surface - live Ep’ , finishing the album and go on tour. Kaya are firmly establishing themselves in the music scene, be a part of it, its been one hell of a ride so far… Kaya are: Natty Vocals Natty and Aina are currently on tour performing alongside EMI Music’s smash dance act Braund Reynolds. They have recently played at Koko and Fabric in London with further dates to follow all over the UK during 2006.
